Silk Route

Considering it was the Olympics season, this was as good a time as any to try out Silk Route in Wilson Garden. The route to the place is as follows. When you’re coming from the Koramangala side, towards Double Road, this is on the left, immediately after the junction before the LalBagh Gate (the junction where a left turn leads you to Ashoka Pillar. you need to go straight). We reached there around 7.30, without reservation, though the places was getting crowded by around 8. And yes, they have reasonable parking space.

They’ve not considered all of the Silk Route, only North Indian and Chinese, with a smattering of Arabian dishes, and er, Curd Rice. The place is dimly lit, lends it a cosy touch, with some good seating options, and uses a lot of the heavy ‘Westside’ furniture. And they have these cute squarish plates. Some of the place-mats could do with better laundering though. They serve alcohol too, a Kingfisher beer costs Rs.110, hope that gives you an indication of the costs.

So, there are a lot of starter options, Indian and Chinese, but the rains outside made us go for a hot Cream of Chicken Soup. It was reasonably good, though it had more of a sweet corn flavour than a cream one. Hmm.

For the main course, we order a Murgh Salli, which is “boneless chicken cooked in the chef’s special yellow gravy”,(I had some evil thoughts here, but never mind), a Fish Peshawar, which is “fish prepared in a delicate blend of spices and herbs”. To go along with that, we ordered a Kashmiri Naan, a “naan stuffed with paneer and tutty fruity”, and a Chef’s special Naan, which is “naan stuffed with chicken, nuts and mild spices”. Though the Naans were quite heavy, the only redeeming dish was the fish, which had a thick, paste like gravy. The chef’s special chicken was really not that good, and actually turned out to be bland. As for the Naans, the paneer and chicken flavours were conspicuous by their absence. Though they have the regular North indian dessert options like Gajar ja Halwa, Kulfi etc, we decided to try out the Mango lassi, which turned out to be extremely thick, with lots of mango. At least, the meal ended well.

The food was not very bad, it was average, maybe it fell below our expectations, considering the price. All of the above cost us about Rs.675, a tad on the higher side for this fare.
