For a change, D had already visited once, but she hadn’t tasted the jamun beer that had been recommended to me. And that was how, we ventured to ORR for an evening out, deviating from my policy of avoiding anything from Brookefield onwards!
Deck Of Brews is a little away from the main road (ORR) and resides in a large industrial-meets-Total Environment building. There are multiple seating options – al fresco, and at least two floors of indoor seating. One reason I was lured was the terrace, but that apparently is open only during weekdays, which is when their main crowd (from the IT parks nearby) frequents the place. The next best spot for a pleasant Bangalore evening was the al fresco area.
Beer was still the main attraction. Unfortunately the Jamun was over, but we pretty much sampled everything available except the stout. Broadly, hugely disappointing, including a monstrosity called Pineapple Saison. I haven’t tasted Lizol yet, but I have a feeling the Apple Cider came close. We chose the least harmful ones (Witbier too was unavailable) – Sunny Haze (Hefeweizen) and a Kolsch.
The Bullet Chicken (bottom left) was our first choice. Spicy chicken, crumb-fried. ‘Spicy’ didn’t really happen, but the Chilli Pork that came immediately after more than made up for it. Since the mains didn’t look very exciting, we went for a Nashville Chicken Sliders – the buttermilk-soaked crumby chicken was quite good. Short-lived happiness since the Chicken Sui Mai, which was our last dish, turned out to be reasonably insipid.
We were left poorer by the time it takes to get there, and a little over Rs.2800. The ambience isn’t too bad, and the service is pleasant, helpful, and prompt, but I wouldn’t really go back for the brew or the food. Each time I plan a trip to ORR, I tell myself that there is a reason I avoid the area, and each time I visit anyway, I tell myself never again. Oh, these toxic relationships!
