A microbrewery is compulsion enough for me to travel to any part of Bangalore, even Sarjapur Road. Some people are not completely in control of their faculties after a few beers, craft beer works for me the other way. That probably explains why I forgot that two of my least favourite microbreweries outside of that hideousness called 3 Monkeys exist on Sarjapur Road. In my defense, our visit to Vapour in Indiranagar, despite the negative reactions we had heard, wasn’t bad at all.
So one fine cloudy Sunday, we chose to travel to Vapour. The place is huge, and while we were there, the alfresco section was kept closed. Predictably, they tried to squeeze everybody into the areas they had kept open. We got ourselves a table on the upper floor. The decor is very lively, despite the distraction of a giant TV. They had a DJ as well. There was a buffet available, but we chose a la carte.
The ceilings have also been used well, something I noticed later. They didn’t have the rice beer we wanted to try, and since the options were limited, we stuck to a Blonde and a cider. Neither was spectacular, and I’d rate the Prost cider higher than this.
Nipah meant that D wouldn’t allow me to have pork. So we asked for Smoky House Beef Fry and a Guntur Chicken Bao that sounded interesting. The latter wasn’t available. On hindsight, I think that was a good thing. The beef was quite good, spicy too. Our replacement for the bao was Ghost Pepper Chicken Wings which also wasn’t available. The compromise choice was a Spicy Baby Chicken, which was decent. It didn’t help that it took the longest while to get to the table. By this time, a really large group had landed and did their best to disrupt everyone else’s experience.
Since the food thus far had delivered, we decided to experiment with a wait-for-it Pepper Sambar Khao Suey. I know. Even beer isn’t an excuse. Predictably, it was a match made in hell. But it was a risk we took, so we can’t really blame the menu. However the next 20 minutes were spent asking all and sundry for the bill. Their excuse was that their machine wasn’t working. I finally said that since my machine was working, I was going to get a cab. We were kept waiting again at the exit and they ended up giving us what they called a bill. We were happy because they left out an item. Usually we point these things out, but the service was bad enough for our conscience to shut up.
The music was good, and the food decent all things considered. The beer was meh and the service was meh-er. Thanks to this, Sarjapur Road has joined Marathahalli in our not-to-go-to places!

P.S. The good part was the return trip through Carmelaram. Doesn’t seem really a part of urban Bangalore. It was a Sunday though, so I am not sure if the relative pristine nature of the place was just an illusion. 🙂
