Big Pitcher

Microbreweries have been sprouting all over the place and Big Pitcher was one of the couple that we had not been to. So on one of those Sundays when I had craft beer on my mind, we decided to drop in there. (map) Five floors on Old Airport Road, I thought that was indeed a brave business decision! The first floor was closed during lunch time, so we made our way to the second floor. The place has a theme straight out of some old western movie, complete with guns, Chuck Norris posters and swinging doors!

Our first choice of brew – Adjust Maadi – wasn’t available. In fact, they had only 3 out of 5 brews available. We asked for a “Czech that Pilsner – Wild Cat Slav Lager” and a “Sarava – Suspiciously Brazilian Witbier” to begin with. I liked the subtle herbal notes and the mild caramel flavour in the first. The latter had a citrus, mildly sweet mix that D preferred. Later, we also tried the “Kingslayer – Medieval Dark Wheat Ale”, but since neither of us are malt fans, this was largely ignored. It didn’t help that the minimum serving was 500 ml.

From the food menu, we asked for the Carne Espinaca and Captain Nair’s Pork Fry. They somehow managed to confuse themselves and brought us a beef version of the latter, which we politely refused. The actual order took a while to get to the table. The beef tossed in Mexican Pepper sauce had a mildly spicy sauce and well cooked meat. The dips did a great complementary job. The pork was quite spicy but we didn’t mind since we were also guzzling beer. We then asked for a Greek Buffalo Soldier pizza – feta cheese and fiery chicken chunks playing lead roles. But we didn’t really like it a lot, mostly because we could still taste the (raw) flour a bit. We were stuffed reasonably by then and despite an interesting sounding Rasmalai Chocolate Terrine, had to skip desserts.

The service disappointed with the mix up, but was otherwise pleasant. All of the above came to a little over Rs.2300. I think the place really works well for larger groups because of the beer, cocktails and plenty of starters. Worth a visit if you’re in that area.
