  • Chrome and the quest for ubiquity

I honestly wanted to write something else, but there was so much excitement generated by two tools this week, across the web, and in me, that I felt that I had to share it. I am still exploring both of these, so it’d be great if you also read the links i share in the post, in case you want to know more.

Lets start with Chrome. That made up 80% of the conversation in Twitter on Tuesday and Wednesday. And made up about 10% of my offline conversations, in which I was spreading the word about it being Google’s new browser, and arguing with convinced individuals that Google did not own Firefox. Which made me wonder, just like the guys at Center Networks, whether all this is important only to some part of a long tail of browser users. I can relate to that. When I redesigned my personal blog a couple of years back, someone told me that it looked weird in Firefox. I asked him what that was!!!! Mozilla became my preferred browser less than a year back. And though I’ve downloaded Opera and Pogo, I’m yet to try them out, while the Flock browser, an excellent tool for social media enthusiasts, is used once in a while. So i guess I can be excused for being shocked  when I read of folk who talk of it being a Windows killer!! The people who should be really afraid are the Firefox guys, this is a good read on that topic.

Meanwhile, all this shouldn’t take away anything from the massive buzz that Google managed to generate, and part of the credit should go to the very unique way of launch – through a comic, which explains the whys and the whats. If we go by this article, Google has been at it for a couple of years now. A couple of good posts to give you a complete picture.

For those who are wondering, Chrome will not give you any more web ecstasy than the stuff that is already out there. But it is fast, with no clutter (even the right click throws up an uncluttered menu), and thus ends up making the screen look bigger. There are some things I miss from my first few days of tinkering. Inspite of the Omnibox, I’d still like a Google search toolbar. I miss my Twitter and del.icio.us plugins. Its eerie though, how my FF crashed right in the middle of the post, and i completed it in Chrome!! It raises some interesting questions on the future of browsing, but for now, Google can pat itself on its back because we hear only good things, though I get scared by such observations. The second tool that I got really kicked about was Ubiquity, from Mozilla Labs, an experiment to make common web tasks easier and quicker. You can read about what can be done with this tool here. I tested out mail and twitter with this and it was quite interesting, and easy. But its most definitely work in progress and will take some doing before it can lay claim to ubiquity.

Meanwhile, Microsoft‘s launch of  IE 8 Beta 2 seems to have got lost in all this frenzy. Is that an indication? On another front, GMDesk, an application that lets you run multiple Google apps without opening up several windows/tabs, seems like something interesting. Google, hmmm.. Google likes Wikipedia, but will still have its own Knol, it likes Firefox, but will still have Chrome. And that leaves me me wondering about Google, about not being evil, and the quest for ubiquity, that it unrelentingly chases, but rarely admits.

    until next time, keep browsing

Update 09/08/08: Now, this I will love Chrome for. Allowing users to have 2 GMail accounts open at the same time. 🙂

  • Its just getting bigger…

A big news earlier this week was the launch of Big TV, with 20 channels to be launched – music, movie, lifestyle, regional..according to this article from some time ago.  (via medianama) Right at the bottom of the article is a paragraph on their internet plans. I, for one, am always intrigued by the BIG plans, since Reliance has a way of upsetting the entire setup, irrespective of the category, and using it to their advantage – whether its through scale, pricing or whatever disruptive means they can think up. This article says that a budget of Rs.100 crore has been earmarked for the marketing and communication of this entity, and also gives the pricing. With that budget, they can afford the tagline “Ho to Big Ho” 🙂

I remember writing a BIG post, quite a while back touching upon the synergy that could be derived out of all the BIG entities – FM, Adlabs, BigFlix, Mobile, Music, Adda, and I had mentioned DTH too. With existing providers scampering about to announce who got a matrimonial tie up faster, reliance, with their content and distribution options could really muscle their way in. Adlabs and Big Adda, for example, are working quite well together, by promoting new movies with a Big Adda site. But what I missed out in that post was the stuff I’m more interested in now – BIG’s IPTV venture, in partnership with Microsoft, about which I’ve been hearing about for quite sometime now. Coincidentally, I also read this article today, which talks about the government approval for IPTV being on the way. For those who are wobbly on IPTV (like me), I’d suggest reading up here and here, though the latter is a bit dated.

As is always the case when I think BIG, my thoughts end up usually on the potential synergy. IPTV brings all the content that you’ve traditionally on TV, but with an interactive and customised aspect. And its not just TV, but also Video On Demand (Tata Sky Showcase). How well BigFlix and Adlabs could be made to work in tandem here. Move over, all those silly games that are showcased on DTH, how about playing some Zapak based cool MMORPG s. Maybe they can even use Big Adda to create a social networking generation of Indian housewives, who’d be gosipping online while watching their favourite saans and bahus. (Tell me when I go overboard) And if their websites have some online shopping options, with the improved targeting  and context that the Internet offers, they could make a killing. I just saw a Big Adda TVC promoting social networking on mobile, so even a ‘quadruple play’ mentioned in the IPTV wiki article might be possible. Also in context, Adlabs-> Reliance Big Pictures -> Big Cinemas.

So, in essence, all the current developments are just about to make BIG bigger.

Meanwhile, a tangential big news is Yahoo’s tie up with Intel to launch an interactive TV channel. Read a good post on it here. And if you thought all of that was big, spend the weekend contemplating these futuristic interfaces.

until next time, just the biginning 😉

BIG update: The TVC is out, and check out the synergy in ‘Rock On’ – Big Pictures, FM, Music, Adda. Now we’re talking!!

  • Ideal

..for everyone concerned, is what the new ‘Idea Rocks India’ campaign looked like to me. Idea is taking Shaan to some 20 towns across India, and the contest is giving you the chance to be part of the tour – there is a Voice of Idea contest that allows the winner to sing with Shaan, there’s also a regular IRI contest that alllows winners to get passes for the event.

Idea is trying to evangelise the online media through at least two efforts here. Firstly, VOI is supposedly India’s first online singing contest. Participants have to enter their recordings online in normal formats. Then the normal process of voting. Secondly, guys who recharge online get a chance to win passes. Meanwhile, there’s also an on ground regular IRI contest which is driven through the mobile platform. While Idea builds brand salience through ground concerts and ets revenues out of the SMS based contest, what is interesting is that except for Delhi, all the others are non metros and tier 2 towns, using the net as a primary medium in such places is quite a good experiment.

Meanwhile, the entire stuff seems to be hosted on msn (while i saw the ad on yahoo :D). For MSN it is building new traffic as well as content. And what’s more, to listen to the songs one has to download Microsoft Silverlight. That, i thought, deserves a ‘Sirji, what an idea sirji’ 🙂

And lastly, for Mirchi and Zee, there’s the content.  Additionally, for Zee, Shaan is a good draw and ‘Voice of Idea’ in particular is a good property to be part of, considering Star has ‘Voice of India’ which Shaan himself comperes. Whatte fun.

Interesting connection – Idea owns a property called Idea Star Singer on Asianet, which is now owned by Rajeev Chandrashekhar, who used to own BPL Mobile, whose only competitor in kerala initially used to be Escotel, which was picked up by Idea. 🙂

until next time, some ideologies do work

  • Bill meets Mark

Well, maybe Bill and Mark have met before in other contexts, but to actually have a promo of MS doing a facebook application in India is perhaps a first. And thats not all, there’s a game on zapak too.

‘Heroes Happen Here’ is the theme of the entire promo being done by MS. While the entire deal looks like a mash up (not literally) of information disseminaton & trials for Visual Studio 2008, Windows Server 2008, SQL Server 2008 (do not close the window, i am as technologically challenged as you are on those) and community building, I, for one, am extremely envious of the brand/product guy who got to do this. It has stuff for IT professionals, developers and enthusiasts.

As you might have guessed, this blog is interested because of the way a social network and a gaming site have been weaved in to the communication strategy. Communication strategy, because i saw an ad for this, not on facebook, but on the rediff homepage. Which means that not only have they spent money on the game and the application, but they’re also spending on advertising the stuff. I say cool!!

I haven’t been able to add the application, but if you do, lemme know how it went.

     until next time, soft socialism
