Karma was a good movie… Dilip Kumar did a decent job…. simple.. but no, this is not a movie review, this is about the other kind of karma.. not so simple..as a kid, and a hindu one at that, i was given a basic understanding of karma and its functionality.. in retrospect, i do believe that it was used more for preventing any unruly behaviour on my part.. karma was the ‘thing’ that would get back at me later if i did any wrong..like in the case of most other things that were told to me, i fell for this one too.. but maybe that was good, anyways..but as time passed, the belief in the flawless machinery of karma gave way to a questioning attitude, and then onto absolute disbelief… it could have been that the machinery was having a slow race competition with the indian judiciary, or with some file in the massive indian bureaucracy, anyways, it seemed to be winning.. there was no retribution from ‘karma’, and that was from experience..not that this knowledge was used in some diabolical plan or for some evil purpose, but the belief had been shattered…More time has passed, and like most other things, the belief system has also come full circle, and most likely is here to stay, because unlike the first time, this is a self learning, and not something that has been drilled into the conscience.. but i do think that it is time for the karma machinery to get a good overhaul, maybe get more efficient… and like the new nationalised bank accounts, become accessible with a simple username and password..so we could actually redeem our karma reward points!! yes, there would of course be the regular issues like ‘Forgot Password’ or an occasional nasty case of hacking, but overall it would be much more convenient… getting movie tickets, that new job, discounts on stuff we badly want to buy, a good marriage/ love life, not getting soaking wet in rains, getting back power supply ..would all be possible with just a karma account… and to get the points, one would have to do good deeds…. a win-win situation..

Ignorance and Bliss
i saw an old woman on the steet
and walked on… putting off a helping hand
for another day when we might meet
if by a strange twist of fate
i happened to know that she would be me and i would be her
on another world and another date
would i still ignore her and walk away
blissfully comfortable in my world, and ignorant of hers,
as i was on that day…
until next time, this is only a temporary aberration 🙂 -
Blessed??
Ajay Devgan (in a borrowed raincoat 🙂 ) is the poster boy for this post. i have been wanting to write this ever since i saw the movie, and a few days back, when i saw another character like him, i had to write, because i know a lot of guys like these, and i sympathise with them..
– the driver who looks on in anguish as a guy zooms past him, riding on the wrong side, because he is too nice/meek not to do it.
-the guy who stutters at the waiter that the people who came after him have gotten a table as well as their food, and he is still waiting.
-the guy who slogs all day at work and watches a colleague walking away with the accolades because he aggressively presented himself.
-the woman who suffers verbal/physical abuse from her husband.
-the kid who is forever bullied by friends/cousins…………………
there is a feeling that aggression has to be developed if you are to succeed/ get out of the sad predicament/s you are in. but what if you are made that way, when you cannot be forcible enough, when you are too nice to take offense? are you going to be defenceless, are you going to suffer forever, is it only you who can save yourself? but if you are made that way, can you save yourself? or will you forever have to slink away to the bathroom to sit and cry in isolation? because you are too meek to even cry aloud.
and sometimes it is not just about being meek…it is because you have a principle that what goes around will come around, and therefore cannot bring yourself to shout/ proclaim/abuse…..
does this world cater only to people who are willing to fight? do you have to snatch something thats yours by right? do you have to shove your way forward all the time? was life ever meant to be such a big fight??
to correct myself, i dont sympathise, i empathise, because quite a few times i see the character when i look in the mirror.
until next time, ” Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth”. -
Evolution and the Theory of God
have finished reading a book called ‘Tomorrow’s God’, which got me to relook at my spirituality, thereby adding some twists to my earlier posts on the issue…
though i wtote of a system, i had God in it. this book eliminated God as we know him (to be fair, the book warns of this at the outset)… it spoke of a system, of which everything is a part and evolution happened because random objects/organisms moved to a higher state of frequency randomly.(this might help)..the book vehemently opposes the present version of God, because it believes that things become far too easy when we can blame it on a God over whom we have no control, our actions, our behaviour etc can be easily attributed to the way God made us… actually, we are all messiahs of ourselves with our own selfish agenda.
the book advocates a system, with every part of the system being responsible for whatever happens in the system…that is, all that occurs in the system is our responsibility, collectively and directly proportionate to our actions…it means that whenever we do something, anything, we should also think of the effects that action/inaction will have, not just on ourselves, but everything else in the system…good thought, huh??
but, meanwhile, i also get reminded of mel gibson’s words from ‘signs’…something that meant “there are two kinds of people in this world… group 1 – who believe that nothing happens by chance.. in times of crisis, deep inside them, they believe that someone is watching over them, that gives them hope… and group 2- who believe that everything is a random occurence.. in times of crisis, deep inside, they know, they are all they’ve got, that fills them with fear…
until next time, have faith in your god… -
In my dreams….
a couple of days back, someone told me about a movie called ‘waking life‘. think its an old movie (2001), but have somehow managed to miss it. in it, there is a hypothesis – what if our dreams were the reality? and the converse…. reminded me of the old one liner-“consciousness – that annoying time between naps”.. but what if…
but thats not what this post is about, this is about dreams, the same dreams, but in a different context…
once upon a time people used to have dreams.. a bunch of dreams that would be achieved over a lifetime, and the joy that came about due to the fulfilment of dreams was one of a kind..we have ambitions and aspirations now, but are we dreaming now?
if i had to compare ‘dreams’ and ‘aspirations/ambitions’ , i’d say that ‘dreams’ are more humane. i wonder if you understood that, but i have no tangible way i can share it with you, its just a thought… and the way we have changed ‘dreams’ into ‘ambitions/aspirations’is by making it a lot easier to achieve them.
earlier people dreamt of buying a home, but now its just an emi away, same goes for a car, consumer durables. instant gratificationis the new mantra – from flat screens to flat tummies and from intercourse to interactive TV..
love, which is arguably the biggest dream factory, is also a very attainable thing – from confessionsof love by sms/ e-cards to marrying the one of your choice (which have moved from taboo stage to norm)….the argument would be “isnt it better that way”… yes it is, but not at the cost of dreams..
once upon a time, a guy called lennon said “Imagine all the people living life in peace. You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one.” wonder if he would say that now..
until next time, dream
(P.S. the title also happens to be one of my favourite songs 🙂 )
