{"id":11092,"date":"2015-12-30T11:38:22","date_gmt":"2015-12-30T06:08:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/manuscrypts.com\/test\/?p=11092"},"modified":"2015-12-27T11:38:52","modified_gmt":"2015-12-27T06:08:52","slug":"a-divided-existence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/manuscrypts.com\/test\/2015\/12\/30\/a-divided-existence\/","title":{"rendered":"A divided existence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A phrase I came across recently captured my &#8216;mood&#8217; in both\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/manuscrypts.com\/test\/2015\/12\/09\/a-worked-up-future\/\" target=\"_blank\">work <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/manuscrypts.com\/test\/2015\/12\/02\/habits-and-home\/\" target=\"_blank\">life<\/a> spheres (links to my most recent posts) very crisply &#8211; <em>nostalgia for the absolute<\/em>. Coined by the philosopher George Steiner, it isn&#8217;t a coincidence that it reached me <a href=\"http:\/\/breakingsmart.com\/season-1\/understanding-elite-discontent\/\" target=\"_blank\">courtesy a Breaking Smart essay<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As I have mentioned earlier, the entire series has given me a lot of perspective, and it&#8217;s heartening\u00a0to know that the kind of thought bubbles I have are more common than I thought. There exists a dichotomy however. My perspectives are largely &#8216;Promethean&#8217; when it comes to tech (and the implications of\u00a0its disruptive power) in the work context. However, in the larger life scenario, I think I am quite the\u00a0&#8216;pastoralist&#8217;, more comfortable with\u00a0<em>sustaining changes to the prevailing social order<\/em>.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>It is possible that dynamic business scenarios have (in my mind) made a Promethean approach inevitable, and work being the source of income, I see it as a much safer option than (the chance of) redundancy caused by being pastoral. In other spheres of life however, while I might have acknowledged the approach in terms of my ownership and consumption, there is a much stronger tug towards a certain vision of a life. That vision seems impossible to attain without a certain amount of planning, a non-agile approach, if you will.
