His paper, currently under peer review, explains\u00a0<em>theoretically how, under certain physical circumstances, life could emerge from nonlife. <\/em>Arguably, consciousness is the factor\u00a0that separates life from non life. However, there&#8217;s also a <a href=\"http:\/\/news.sfsu.edu\/consciousness-has-less-control-believed-according-new-theory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">new theory<\/a> that proposes that consciousness <em>is far less powerful than people believe, serving as a passive conduit rather than an active force that exerts control. <\/em>The article compares it to the internet, and says that just like the internet can be used to discover, share, buy etc, it&#8217;s actually the person on the web\/mobile who is actually deciding. It even argues that consciousness is not made to study itself.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>It made me think of artificial intelligence, especially since I also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.in\/The-man-who-created-the-worlds-first-self-aware-robot-says-this-next-discovery-will-change-the-human-robot-relationship-forever\/articleshow\/48208557.cms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">read,<\/a> around the same time, about the first self aware robot. Its creator is now aiming for real time self awareness. I think we will have to cross the morality hurdle before that happens. (my <a href=\"https:\/\/manuscrypts.com\/test\/2014\/08\/13\/artificial-morality\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">post<\/a> from sometime back, and a very pertinent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/can-we-create-an-ethical-robot-1437758519\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">article<\/a>\u00a0on the societal challenges) Our devices, and technology in general, are changing societal mores and behaviours. This very interesting article writes about &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/venturebeat.com\/2015\/07\/19\/reorganizing-the-world-for-living-alone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reorganising the world for living alone<\/a>&#8216;, as an on demand service economy based on apps increasingly replaces the humans in our lives. In fact, I&#8217;d <a href=\"https:\/\/manuscrypts.com\/test\/2015\/02\/11\/loneliness-and-the-ai-evolution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">written<\/a> sometime back on how we will teach AI to fulfil lower, and then higher order needs. (as per Maslow&#8217;s hierarchy) Maybe then, as AI understands more and more about its creators, it will help us answer the question our consciousness seems incapable of answering &#8211; what is life?
