Ken Liu believes that all fiction is about prizing the logic of metaphors over reality. This really is the underlying theme of this book, and therefore, figuring out the metaphors in some of the stories is what I considered the most exciting part of reading this book. It is speculative fiction at its best and cuts across sub genres – science fiction, fantasy, steampunk, historical fiction and so on. Excels in imagination and narration, and is highly recommended!
This was our fourth attempt at finding a good eatery in Forum Shantiniketan. Thanks to a Sangria disaster, this too wasn’t anything to write home about. To be fair, the food wasn’t too bad, and the ambiance was pleasant enough, so if you’re in the mood for Portuguese food, and feeling adventurous, give it a shot.
Travel, to me, and specially in the recent past, has been a way not just to journey to new places, but inward too. The last year has been a watershed on both counts, more so the latter. There are definitely miles to go, but I believe that I have made some advances on traveling light.
Everybody lies, as the title suggests, to their colleagues, friends, spouse and most importantly, to themselves. What they search for, and what they click, are better indicators of their true nature. This is the premise of the book, and a major portion of it is dedicated to reasoning out how the troves of data we generate can lead to fundamental insights. But it also provides a counter balance towards the end – the limits of data, intangible measures and the ethics of mining data. The potential of data to create new understanding in social sciences and human behaviour – reason enough to read this!
Prost was a favourite haunt in Koramangala, and the Whitefield version promises to be too! The beer is decent and so is the food, if you stick to the starters and choose wisely. But the biggest reason we’ll keep dropping in is the view – arguably the best a microbrewery in Bangalore can offer.
