Even the best of liberal democracies have not been able to solve for “identities”. Fukuyama does a great job of tracing the evolution of identity in the first part of the book, but fumbles a little bit by restricting himself to a single perspective when analysing contemporary identity politics in the second half.
Habit much!
I’ve always been a believer in habits, but now I also realise that they can limit one’s growth if they are not (re)aligned to one’s intentions. As I grow older, I can feel the self’s resistance to any sort of change.
Lives of the Stoics: The Art of Living from Zeno to Marcus Aurelius
The core tents of Stoicism are hugely relevant in today’s world, and the lives of the 26 Stoics offer the best lessons to imbibe the philosophy. The narrative is quite accessible and is a great start to understanding the philosophy.
A sense of senescence
Reading and a few recent experiences made me think a little more deeply about old age than I usually do. There is no freedom from old age, but maybe we can be better prepared.
