Grihastha

In ancient India, the four life stages prescribed for a man were Brahmacharya, Garhasthya, Vanaprastha, Sanyasa. A person in the second stage is known as Grihastha. He enters the stage when he gets married. The qualities of the woman he marries as well as a grihastha’s own qualities are described in Vishnupurana Ansh 3.

Grihapati

A sage. His parents Vishwanara and Shuchishmati lived on the banks of the Narmada. They were childless and Shuchishmati asked her husband to find a way to get a son. Vishwanara went to Kashi and prayed to Shiva, who blessed that a son would soon be born to the couple. This was Grihapati. When he was 9, Narada said that he would have a fear of fire. Grihapati prayed to Shiva and learned Agni skills. It was because of this that the shivalinga he set up at Kashi is known as Agnishwara.

Griddhrika

A bird born to Kashyapa and Tamra. Her five sisters were Kaki, Shyeni, Bhasi, Shuchi and Griva as per Agnipurana Chapter 19.

Griddhravada

A peak in the Himalayas where Shiva lives. Brahmins who visit this place earn salvation and others have their sins pardoned as per Mahabharata Vanaparva Chapter 84 verse 91.

A mountain in northern India. This was where the Lamshuras rescued Brihadratha as per Mahabharata Shantiparva Chapter 49 verse 82.

Gritsamada (3)

The son of Indra and Mukunda. Once when the sage Rugmangada was out, Indra took his wife Mukunda in the guise of the sage. She became pregnant and this child was Gritsamada who grew up to be a scholar. No one could beat him in a debate. He once attended a shraadha at Magadha with Vasishta and others. There, Atri ridiculed him on his parentage. He came back and questioned Mukunda who told him the truth. He was ashamed of his mother’s act and cursed that she would become a tree. She cursed back that he would have a daitya as son. Gritsamada got his curse revoked by Ganapati as per Ganeshapurana.

A king in the Bhargava dynasty and the son of Suhotra. He had two brothers named Kashya, Kusha and a son named Shunaka as per Bhagavata Navamaskanda.
