Wife of Vasishta. Arundhati was born to the prajapati Kardama and his wife Devahuti.
Arundhati’s devotion to her husband was unmatched, according to Mahabharata Aranyaparva Chapter 225 verse 15. But once Arundhati became suspicious of Vasishta. As per Mahabharata Adiparva Chapter 232 verses 27-29, since her doubts were unfounded, it caused her beauty was tarnished.
Arundhati was part of Brahma’s court as per Mahabharata Sabhaparva Chapter 11 verse 41. Even the saptarishis respected her, as per Mahabharata Vanaparva Chapter 226 verse 8.
Once, when the saptarishis were meditating in the Himalayas, the land suffered a drought for twelve consecutive years. They struggled to get fruits for their sustenance. At this time, Arundhati started praying to Shiva. Shiva appeared in the form of a brahmin. Since there was no food available, due to the drought, she gave him some ber fruit. That ended the drought. Shiva showed everyone his true form and blessed Arundhati. From then on, it became a holy place, as per Mahabharata Shalyaparva Chapter 48 verses 38 -54.
Arundhati once told Vrishadarbhi the ill effects of receiving gifts as per Mahabharata Anushasanaparva Chapter 10 verse 45. She also spoke about the secrets of dharma as per Mahabharata Anushasanaparva Chapter 130 verses 3-11. All the devas once praised Arundhati and Brahma blessed her, according to Mahabharata Anushasanaparva Chapter 130 verses 12-13.
Arundhati and Vasishta meditated on the banks of the Saraswati and attained a samadhi state as per Vanaparva Chapter 130 verse 17.
