Gadadhara

A name for Vishnu. There is a place named Gaya to the north of the mountain Kalanjara, south of Himavan, east of Kushasthali and west of Vasupura. Here, a king named Gaya once conducted the ashwamedha, manushyamedha and mahamedha yajnas. He was guarded by Vishnu in a hazy form, carrying a gada (mace). Thus he got the name Gadadhara as per Vamanapurana Chapter 76.

Gada (2)

A yadava and brother of Balarama. In addition to Devaki, Vasudeva’s wives were Rohini, Bhadra, Malini, Madira, Ila, Rochana, Pauravi. With Rohini, his sons were Balarama, Gada, Sarana, Durdama, Vikala, Krita, as per Bhagavata Navamaskanda.

He was present at Draupadi’s swayamwar as per Mahabharata Adiparva Chapter 185 verse 17. After Arjuna married Subhadra, her dowry was carried from Dwaraka to Indraprastha by Gada, as per Mahabharata Adiparva Chapter 220 verse 32. When Krishna reached Dwaraka, Gada gave him a warm welcome as per Mahabharata Sabhaparva Chapter 2 verse 35. Gada was present when the Pandavas entered their palace at Indraprastha built by Maya, for the first time, as per Mahabharata Sabhaparva Chapter 4 verse 39. He was present at Yudhishtira’s rajasuya with the other yadavas as per Mahabharata Sabhaparva Chapter 34 verse 16. When Shalwa attacked Dwaraka, he was one of the yadavas entrusted with protecting it as per Mahabharata Vanaparva Chapter 15 verse 9. He accompanied Krishna to Yudhishtira’s ashwamedha as per Mahabharata Ashwamedhaparva Chapter 86 verse 9. At the time of the Yadava downfall, Krishna was very angry when Gada was attacked, as per Mahabharata Mausalaparva Chapter 3 verse 45.

Gada (1)

An asura born to Kashyapa and Diti. Vishnu killed him and Vishwakarma made a weapon with his bones. This came to be known as gada as per Agnipurana Chapter 114.

Gandaki

A river in northern India which flows into the Ganga,

During the samudra manthan, a dispute arose on the ownership of the amrit. Vishnu, as Mohini, tricked the asuras into giving away the amrit. Shiva became infatuated with Mohini and embraced her. They began sweating and the sweat flowed as a river and that was Gandaki as per Skandapurana Asurakanda.

A few worms on its banks once fell into the river. They immediately gained salvation since the river was made of the sweat of Vishnu and Shiva. From then on, it became known as a holy river as per Skandapurana Asurakanda.

People who drink its water become free of sins as per Mahabharata Adiparva Chapter 69 verse 20. It is also known as Narayani, Salagrami, Hiranyavati, Hiranwati as per Mahabharata Bhishmaparva Chapter 9 verse 25. When Krishna, Bhima and Arjuna were traveling from Indraprastha to Girivraja, they crossed this river as per Mahabharata Sabhaparva Chapter 20 verse 27. The river is a mix of all the holy rivers. So those who bathe in it get the benefits of conducting ashwamedha and attain suryaloka as per Mahabharata Vanaparva Chapter 84 verse 113. It is also mentioned in Agni’s origins as per Mahabharata Vanaparva Chapter 222 verse 22.

Gandaka

A region in India, situated on the banks of the river Gandaki, hence the name. Bhima conquered this place as per Mahabharata Sabhaparva Chapter 22 verse 4.
