Utadhya (1)

A son of Angiras as per Mahabharata Adiparva Chapter 65 verse 5. He advised Maandaata as per Mahabharata Shantiparva Chapter 90. He married Soma’s daughter Bhadra as per Mahabharata Anushasanaparva Chapter 154 verse 12.

Varuna had his eyes on Bhadra and that was when she married Utadhya. Varuna did not like this and once when Utadhya was away, he kidnapped Bhadra and hid her in the ocean. Utadhya searched for her and finally heard the details from Narada. As per Utadhya’s request Narada asked Varuna to return Bhadra but Varuna refused to listen. Utadhya became angry and drank up the ocean and started drying up all the streams and rivers. Varuna became frightened and returned Bhadra. Utadhya forgave Varuna and returned the ocean to him as per Mahabharata Anushasanaparva Chapter 154.

Undaram

A place in South India. As per Mahabharata Chapter 31 verse 71, Sahadeva conquered this area and its citizens presented Yudhishtira with gifts during the rajasuya as per Mahabharata Vanaparva Chapter 51 verse 12.

Unchavritti

A poor brahmin who survived on alms. Once, he got some grain powder and after giving part to Agni and part to brahman, he distributed some of it among his sons, and then sat down to eat the remaining. Dharma then appeared in the form of a brahmin and Unchavritti gave all the food to him. But the guest was not satisfied and therefore Unchavritti gave him his son’s share too. Dharma was impressed by this and took the entire family to heaven. At that time, some of the grain fell on a mongoose and turned that part of its body into a golden colour. Though the mongoose tried to get all of its body in that colour, it was not successful.

Ujjaini

One of the seven holy places in ancient India. It was earlier known as Avanti. Shipra flows through this city and on its banks is the Mahakalakshetra. Shiva is the idol here. Another holy place called Kotitheertha is also situated here. Bathing here is equivalent to conducting an ashwamedha yajna as per Mahabharata Vanaparva Chapter 82 verse 49. These places are described in Kalidasa’s Meghdoot.
