This famous king was the father of Marutta and the son of Karandama. He conducted a hundred ashwamedha yajnas and was respected even by Brihaspati. He had eight wives including Vara, Gauri, Subhadra, Vibha, Manyavati, Kumudwati as per Markandeyapurana. In addition, he also married Vaishalini, the princess of Vishala. He won the hand of Vaishalini  by defeating other kings in a swayamvar. These kings later got together, defeated Avikshit in battle, and took him prisoner. He was finally rescued by Karandama, as per Mahabharata Ashwamedhaparva Chapter 4 verses 19-21.
