Anasuya

According to Vishnupurana Ansh 1 Chapter 10, the wife of Atri, son of Brahma.

Antecedents: Vishnu – Brahma – Swayambhumanu – Devahuti – Anasuya.

Brahma’s son Swayambhumanu married Shatarupa and their children were Uttanapada, Priyavrata, Ahuti, Devahuti, and Prasuti. Devahuti was married to Brahma’s son Kardama. They had two daughters – Kala and Anasuya. According to Bhagavata Skanda 1 Chapter 4, Kala married Marichi and Anasuya married Vasishta.

Once, there was a drought for 10 years and the Ganga became dry. It was Anasuya who used her tapas energy to create food for the world and made the Ganga flow again. Once, for the devas, Anasuya extended a night into ten consecutive days. Rama, Lakshmana and Sita visited Atri’s ashram during their exile and met Anasuya there. Atri also told them about Anasuya’s tapas energy and their respect for her grew even more. Anasuya told Sita that the greatest tapas is serving one’s husband. She gifted Sita a necklace, other jewelry and a dress, and blessed that Sita would look her best when she wore these, according to Ramayana Ayodhyakanda Sargas 117, 118.

According to Vishnupurana Ansh 1 Chapter 10, Anasuya’s sons were Dattatreya, Durvasa and Chandra.  They were the incarnations of Vishnu, Shiva and Brahma respectively. (detailed under Atri)

According to Mahabharata Adiparva Chapter 122 verse 62, she was an apsara married to Kashyapa and was present during Arjuna’s birth celebrations.

Anala (3)

The daughter of Malyavan and Sundari. According to Uttarakanda, she was married to Vishwavasu and their daughter was named Kumbhinasi.

According to Mahabharata Adiparva Chapter 66 verse 71, a great granddaughter of Daksha’s daughter Krodhavasha. Krodhavasha – Shweta – Surabhi – Rohini – Anala. She was also married to Kashyapa.

Anala (1)

One of Daksha’s daughters. Some others were Diti, Aditi, Danu, Kalika, Tamra, Krodhavasha, and Manu. They were all married to Kashyapa. According to Ramayana Aranyakanda Sarga 14, all the trees and plants were born from her.

Anaranya

According to Mahabharata Adiparva Chapter 1 verse 236, a king of the Ikshvaku clan. As per Mahabharata Anushasanaparva Chapter 115 verse 59, he was a vegetarian. Once Ravana, after gaining a boon from Shiva surrounded Anaranya’s kingdom. Anaranya immediately challenged Ravana to a duel, but died in the duel. According to Brahmandapurana Chapter 45, before he died, he cursed Ravana that in the Ikshvaku clan would be born Dasarath, and his son Rama would kill Ravana.

Anarakatheertha

This is a holy place frequented by Brahma and Vishnu. According to Mahabharata Vanaparva Chapter 83 verse 168, anyone who bathes here is absolved from all his sins.
